later today. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it is march 22nd. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. we begin with breaking news, a fatal shooting leaving three people dead at quantico and it is believed they are all marines. the shooter barricaded himself inside a building. police say he's among the dead after apparently shooting himself. shannon travis is live from quantico, virginia, this morning. shannon, what the very latest? >> reporter: we are told this is an active crime scene as the investigation is ongoing, but we are told three people are dead, all believed to be marines. the shooter is believed to be a male, the first victim is also believed to be a male, and the second victim, the gender is unclear. now, what actually happened around 11:00 p.m. we are told that a notification went out,

that a dispatch was made, that there was a shooting near the officer's candidate school and basically after that the base was essentially on lockdown. a public address went over the loud speakers telling everyone in their homes to stay in hair homes and to lock the doors. from there a first victim was found near the officer's candidate school. shortly after that, they begin to apprehend the shooter. the shooter then went over to a bar rack, basically where the service members fleet, and barricaded himself inside of a room. there was a period of about two hours between the time that the first dispatch call went out about the actual shooting and the time that they actually entered this room where the shooter was. once they entered the room, zoraida, they found the shooter who apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. and another victim, it's unclear how that victim got into the room with the shooter, but that was the second victim that was in there.

again, two hours between the time that the dispatch went out about the initial shooting and the time that they actually entered that room. officials tell us that they also tried to make communication between those two hours with the shooter, unclear if they were successful or not. again, officials here are telling us that this is a crime scene, it's an ongoing investigation. one of the things we pressed them on was if there's any chance that any other victims that they have yet to find on base, they said unequivocally no, it is just those three victims mentioned. again, the marines on the base and the officials we spoke to asked everyone to basically pray for them. >> i know it is an ongoing investigation and we'll get to the motive eventually. shannon travis reporting live, thank you. major new development in the murder of tom clemmons. mr. police are taking a strong look at whether a suspect shot dead by police in texas is the same man wanted in the killing of the colorado prison chief.

a man was gunned down after a wild chase in a car similar to one seen leaving the home where clemens was shot dead as he answered the door. we are joined live from decatur, texas, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. after the high-speed chase yesterday that topped out at times at more than 100 miles per hour, the case here in texas is getting a great deal of attention from those investigators in colorado. this is how a high-speed chase across texas ended. a black cadillac with two colorado license plates smashed by an 18-wheeler, but the crash didn't stop the driver from getting out of the car and firing away at law enforcement officers. he was shot and killed in the firefight. >> he wasn't planning on being taken alive. i mean, that's obvious, that he was trying to hurt somebody and trying to hurt the police. >> reporter: the chase started when a sheriff's deputy tried to pull the cadillac over on a remote stretch of texas highway. deputy james boyd was shot twice

in the chest, but he was wearing a bullet-proof vest and is expected to survive. that triggered a long high-speed chase. >> when he came by me, i would say he was probably running 100 miles an hour, just had his left arm out the window and he was just shooting. he shot four times when he passed by my car parked in the median of the highway. >> reporter: the denver post quoting federal and state officials reporting that the suspect is 28-year-old evan spencer ebell, a parolee from the denver area. they say ebell is the focus of the investigation into the murder of tom evans, the director of the colorado prison system. in a press release thursday night, el paso county investigators in colorado did not deny the accuracy of the reports but instead criticized the leak of evan ebell's name by law enforcement sources. >> i know there's a lot of rumors going around and people wanting to know if this is connected to the colorado shooting of the director of the prison system. we don't know that it is or it's

not. >> reporter: and in another strange twist, denver police investigators also say there's a strong connection between the driver of the cadillac in texas and the murder of a 27-year-old pizza delivery driver last sunday afternoon. nathan lee i don't knon's body outside of denver and his family is struggling to figure out why anyone would want to kill a young father of three girls delivering pizzas to earn extra money to support his family. >> since sunday we have just been a total wreck. just when you think you have cried your tears and you can't cry anymore, that's all you do. >> reporter: so with those two murders in colorado, exactly their connection is not clear at this point, but a great deal of attention from these investigators. investigators from colorado from the el paso, county, area and the denver area have flown down to north texas. we are told by law enforcement

officials here in the town of decatur that there's evidence inside that black cadillac that was involved in that high-speed chase here yesterday that would be of great interest to those investigators. but it was hard to get specifics after exactly what they were talking about, but those investigators are now on the ground here in texas combing through the evidence from the high-speed chase yesterday. >> thank you, ed. new developments in the gun control debate. the national rifle association taking aim at gun control measures in new york suing over the state facts, which strengthens the existing assault weapons ban. the nra affiliate claims the law would push through without public input. it would include a statewide gun registry, uniform licensing standards and seven bullet limit in magazines. many families joined mayor michael bloomberg yesterday and revived the ban on assault weapons. he had a message for lawmakers

including democrats who dropped the portion of the gun regulation passage. he says, quote, think about newtown. here's national correspondent joe johns. >> reporter: with a ban on so-called assault weapons all but dead in the senate according to tom democrat harry reid, the vice president said he's not giving up. >> i'm not going to rest nor is the president until we do all of these things, all of these things. >> reporter: he told the family of a teacher killed protecting children in the newtown, connecticut, school shooting that the country needs some political backbone. >> you know, it's time for a political establishment to show the courage your daughter showed. >> reporter: the father of a 6-year-old also killed at newtown said shame on the congress. >> i'm really ashamed to see that congress doesn't have the guts to stand up and make a change and put a ban on these type of weapons and universal background checks.

>> reporter: from new york's mayor bloomberg a call for public pressure. >> if you want to make a difference, you've got to pick up the phone, call your congressperson. >> reporter: but what happened was no surprise. conservative democrats in the senate up for re-election risk riling up pro-gun forces in an election year if they vote for the ban. democratic supporters like retiring michigan senator carl levin are frustrated do. you think it's worth just having a vote? >> sure. i think it's important that people express their views and have a chance to vote those views. there are people back home that can judge if aagree or disagree. >> reporter: bad for democrats. >> it's not the politics i want to get here. this goes way bond politics. >> reporter: late thursday harry reid released a statement saying he wants to bring a gun safety bill to the floor after the upcoming recess, including provisions on background checks. he said he also wants a vote on an assault weapons ban

amendment. so there appears to be one last chance for the senate to vote on the ban after all. the nra saying they've always expected there would be a vote on the ban and they say they are prepared for a lot of pressure on senators to pass it. joe johns, cnn, washington. >> our thanks to joe. later on "starting point" we'll talk to aurora shooter survivor steven barton who has been working with newtown families in the wake of the massacre. the united nations launched an investigation to find out whether chemical weapons were used in syria's bloody civil war. the assad regime and rebel forces accusing each other of chemical war fair, but u.s. military officials tell cnn their intelligence suggests neither side used those weapons. 183 air traffic control towers on the chopping block. today we learn which ones the faa will shut down. some of the towers are practically brand new. blame the four spending cuts for all of this. the towers handle low to moderate amounts of air traffic and use mostly contract workers

lifted just before 3:00 this morning. the victims and the motive still not known this morning. 100 vehicles mashed up on the main highway near edmonton and calgary. about 100 people ended up in hospitals but only one person was seriously hurt there. police think bad weather and excessive speed helped setoff that crazy chain reaction. they hope to have the highway back open this morning. legal troubles for nicolas sarkozy. a judge charged him with breach of trust. he's accused of taking money to illegally fund his campaign. his lawyers say he could appeal. and there's a plan in the hitch to ditch the mail this saturday. the postal service legally must deliver the mail six days a week. and that opinion could mean lawsuits to stop the plan if the postal service's plan does go through you would still get packages and express mail on saturdays. just no mail delivery.

president obama preparing for the final stop on his middle east tour. he'll be in jordan for talks with king abdullah. the president is wrapping up his visit to israel and the west bank spending time earlier at the grave, the former prime minister assassinated in 1995. the president is trying to revive peace talks and reassure israelis that america is on their side. >> today i want to tell you, particularly the young people, so that there's no mistake here, so long as there's a united states of america, atem lo lolani, you are not alone. >> you are not alone. senior international correspondent ivan watson is live from amman, jordan, today. what's on tap for the president today? >> reporter: well, he's continued his term offensive trying to convince a skeptical israeli he's a friend of israel.

he visited the holocaust memorial in israel. and he spoke out about never wanting to see some evil like this happen again. he also went and visited the tombs of two important figures in the history of israel. theodore hertzel, the founder of the design movement and placed a stone at his grave. and he also visited the grave of rabin, the assassinated leader killed by an israeli who protested to the moves rabin had made toward peace. this was a symbolic gesture because president obama placed a stone from the martin luther king memorial on that grave trying to draw a parallel basically between the african-american civil rights movement and a rooabin and his efforts. president obama is trying to balance outreach to israel with his push towards trying to restart a stalled peace process between the israelis and

latest developments live from quantico this morning, shannon, what do we know right now? >> reporter: we are still monitoring those developments as they unfold. we are being told that an official briefing for the media will happen at about 7:00 a.m., but let's go over exactly some of the details as we know them now. you mentioned them, christine, three people dead, all of them believed to be marines. the shooter believed to be male, the first victim believed to be male as well. and the second victim, gender unclear. now, let's walk through the series of events as we understand them. about 11:00 last night, there was a dispatch over the marines, the officer's candidate school. at that point an announcement went out over the marine base's public announcement system telling everyone on base to stay inside and to lock their doors and stay inside. that lockdown that you mentioned. shortly after that, officials, police officials began to

apprehend the shooter. they realized that the shooter had made his way not too far from where the shooting, the first shooting actually happened, over to a barrack with the service members actually sleep, he had barricaded himself into a room. now, between the time that they realized that the shooter was in the barracks and the time they actually entered the room, christine, there was two hours that passed as they tried to establish communication with the shooter. up clear if they actually made that, but once they entered that room they found yet more tragedy. the shooter dead, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and another victim. we are not sure how that victim got into the room with the shooter. police again, marine base officials again are telling us they will provide us with whatever details they have, but this is essentially a crime scene investigation as we have it right now. a spokesman telling us that one message that he really is urging

for the public is to pray for the families. christine? >> oh, wow. any word on motive? do we know anything about the shooter or we are waiting for authorities to release that information at 7:00? >> reporter: great question. we pressed the spokesman that we have spoken with about motive, about details, about the shooter himself. we hope to get those again at 7:00 once they study this a bit more. one question that we were keen on asking was, is there any possibility that there are any other casualties on base that they are unaware of? the officials telling us it is just limited to the three casualties as we have named them. >> shannon travis following this still developing story. thanks. 32 minutes past the hour, now to a developing story in southeast georgia. there's a hunt right now for the person who fatally shot this little 13-month-old boy in the face. and reportedly shot his mother in the leg. sherry west said she was pushing

her son antonio in a stroller yesterday morning near their home when two boys in their teens or younger approached her with a gun. >> why, why my little one? you know, you should have just taken what you wanted and go. >> he said, i'm going to kill you if you don't give me your money. i said, i swear i don't have any. i put my arms over my baby and he shoved me and then he shot my baby right in the head. >> authorities in the town of brunswick say no other witnesses have come forward. detectives have have been going door to door looking for suspects. so far there have been no arrests. a developing story out of texas may help solve the murder of tom clemens. colorado police are at the scene of a police shoot-out that left the suspect dead. it may have been the last stand the suspect who allegedly killed the colorado prison chief had.

inside that black cadillac that will be of great interest to those investigators. and now the question is, just how those two different murders might be connected and how all of this plays to the suspect that is being looked at very closely. we'll wait and see how this develops today. >> very raw frr the family as they try to draw the pieces together to figure out what really happened here. ed, thank you. >> a big day for the faa as the agency will announce which air traffic control towers will be shut down. dozens across the country will be locked up and left because of the forced budget cuts. cnn's renae marsh is in frederick, maryland, at one of the airports that will be impacted. and we understand that tower has not been up and running for a year. is this a pretty wide impact with the number of towers? can you hear me? >> reporter: zoraida, here's what i can tell you. this tower you see behind me here, we know that it was built just 10 months ago and we know

that today later on they could find out that they will have to be shut down. so the impacts on the flyer will simply be this, delayed flights, there could be fewer flights. and for the air traffic controllers inside, it could mean they are without. cnn is inside frederick, maryland's air traffic control tower. it's brand-spanking new built with $5.3 million in federal stimulus money. opened just last may, and now you guessed it likely to be shut down by who else? the federal government. frederick is one of 238 towers at small and medium airports the faa may close because of forced spending cuts. >> we are awarded the money and, you know, ten months later they say you don't need a tower here. so it's the world of mixed messages. >> reporter: in florida the

government also givette and takette away, 1.8 million in stimulus money went to construct this new tower at oprah locka. $1 million for this tower in st. petersberg. now all on the chopping block. >> it looks to be -- >> this navy veteran has been clearing pilots for takeoff and landing for the past 11 years. it's all she knows. >> scary because i'm going to have to figure out something else to do for an income. it means i'm going on unemployment and that's the only income i'll have for me and my daughter. >> reporter: while airports will remain open, she says closing towers affects safety. >> there's going to be close calls, there's going to be midairs, there's going to be a runway accident. >> some pilots agree. >> tragically something is going to happen and we'll have to e review the decision. >> reporter: a tough sell for

good morning, again. 50 minutes after the hour. we'll get you up-to-date on breaking news from quantico marine base locked down overnight after a fatal shooting. three people are dead this morning, including the gunman. police say he committed suicide. it's believed all the victims are marines. the lockdown lifted before 3:00 a.m. we'll bring you developments throughout the morning here on cnn. the navy ordered the cancellation of commercial flights out of the gauuantanamo bay prison camp. they are opposing the ban

because of a regulation overlooked for years. visitors have to wait for the military's once-a-week flight. they complain the move is designed to limit the flow of information coming from the camp where at least 26 inmates are on a hunger strike to protest the conditions there. the now 14-year-old daughter of bmichael jackson has been questioned about her father's final days as a lawsuit against a concert promoter. you can see her there at her father's funeral. the jacksons are saying the company hired conrad murray convicted of involuntary manslaughter in jackson's death. the company says jackson hired murray. and if you live anywhere from the rockies to the east coast, brace yourself for wet and cold conditions. i feel like we are saying this every single day. jennifer, happy spring. what's going on? >> you're right. zoraida is a broken record over there. we are always talking snow and

rain. once again, spring showers out there. we'll look at the radar, notice for yourself, you're seeing rain and lightning starting to die out, but all the rain is spreading into atlanta. expect a few delays there throughout the morning, but we are still talking snow despite the fact that it is spring. coming down through the central plains, this is going to be tapering off. but we have another storm in the works. it's going to be coming in from the pacific northwest. and it has a lot of energy with it. we are expecting anywhere between 6 to 10 inches of snowfall, especially right along interstate 70 and that includes kansas city. now, that really comes this weekend. now, we'll track this for you. here comes the low. it's going to be bringing snow late tonight through denver. we are talking in those locations potentially 10 inches of snowfall. then it moves over towards the east and will bring a lot of rain to the south. one to two inches of rainfall, snow for st. louis. we are talking potentially four inches of snow. but here's where things get interesting. we'll have to move it ahead to monday. guess what?

murder of colorado's prison chief. new gun laws in new york state and the nra already fighting back with a lawsuit. a big upset on the first day of the big dance. the number three seed goes down and a top seed barely survives. all the drama. good morning, welcome to "early start." i'm >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it is friday, march 22nd. 6:00 a.m. in the east. we are beginning with breaking news this morning. a shooting at quantico leaving three dead at the virginia marine base. including the suspected shooter who apparently took his own life after a standoff with police. it is believed all the dead are marines. shannon travis is live from quantico, virginia, this morning. what is the latest here, shannon? >> yeah, zoraida. we're waiting for about an hour from now, at about 7:00 a.m. for marine base officials to come out and brief us on what more they have learned. but here's what we have so far. the three that you mentioned,

three dead, all believed to be marines. two of them, the shooter, and the first victim, believed to be male, and the second victim, gender unclear. now here's what happened. about 11:00 last night, there was a dispatch put out, basically a 911, that there was a shooting on the base. it happened near the officer's candidate school. the dispatch went out and there was a public announcement made over the p.a. system basically on base telling everyone on base in their homes to stay in their homes, lock the doors, and the base was put on lockdown. from there, police officials began to look for this suspect. basically apprehend the suspect. they learned that he had holed himself up, barricaded himself, in a barracks, which was obviously where the service members on base actually sleep. barricaded himself into a room. they tried to establish communications with the gunman. unclear if the gunman was responsive, if they were able to establish those communications. but about two hours after the

point where they got the call, the 911, that there was a shooting, and that they entered the room, there was about two hours later, once they entered the room, zoraida, more tragedy, the shooter dead of a self- -- apparently a self-inflicted gunshot wound. another victim, in the room with the shooter, unclear how that person got in there. again, a lot of this is being investigated right now. officials tell us that this is an active crime scene. one of the officials that we spoke with has a message, though, for anyone who's listening in the public. >> ask for everyone's prayers and thoughts for the families who are affected by this tragedy, and then we ask, also that you give us time to sort out the details and get you guys the accurate information that you guys want. >> now, again, zoraida, at about 7:00 a.m. we expect to hear some more information. we'll pose more questions to them. one question that we had to clear up, if there's any chance at all that there are any other

victims that have yet to be found, officials tell us no, that these victims, these casualties are limited to those three. >> i know you have asked for more information on the shooter and perhaps a motive, as well. and we don't have those details as of yet, right? >> correct. we don't have those details as of yet. we hope to get them in this press conference that, as i mentioned, that we'll see at 7:00 a.m. >> shannon travis reporting live for us. appreciate it. >> police in colorado are taking a, quote, strong look at whether a suspect shot debt by police in texas is the same man wanted in the killing of colorado's policen chief. the man was gunned down after a wild chase in a car that was similar to one seen leaving the colorado home where tom clemens was shot dead, as he answered his door. cnn correspondent ed lavandera joins us live now from decatur, texas. what's the latest on this, ed? >> well, hundreds of miles away from where the director of the colorado prison system was gunned down and killed at his

front door, the focus is now on texas. and specifically, the driver of a black cadillac that ended -- that was killed after a wild high-speed chase yesterday afternoon. this is how a high speed chase across north texas ended. a black cadillac with two different colorado license plates smashed by an 18-wheeler. but the crash didn't stop the driver from getting out of the car and firing away at law enforcement officers. he was shot and killed in the firefight. >> he wasn't planning on being taken alive. i mean, that's obvious that he was trying to hurt somebody and he was trying to hurt the police. >> reporter: the chase started when a sheriff's deputy tried to pull the cadillac over on a remote stretch of texas highway. deputy james boyd was shot twice in the chest. but he was wearing a bulletproof vest, and is expected to survive. that triggered a long, high-speed chase. >> he came by me, i was say going about 100 miles an hour. had his left arm out the window and he was just shooting.

he shot four times when he passed by my car parked in the median of the highway. >> reporter: the denver post quoting federal and state officials reports the suspect is 28-year-old evan spencer ebell, a parolee from the denver area. police say he is the focus of the investigation into the murder of tom clements, the director of colorado's prison system. in a press release thursday night el paso county investigators in colorado did not deny the accuracy of the report but instead criticized the leak of the name by law enforcement was sos. >> i know there's a lot of rumors going around and people wanting to know if this is connected to the colorado shooting of the director of the prison system. we don't know that it is. or it's not. >> reporter: and in another strange twist, denver police investigators also say there's a strong connection between the driver of the cadillac in texas, and the murder of a 27-year-old pizza delivery driver last

sunday afternoon. nathan leon's body was found in a remote area outside of denver. his family has struggled to figure out why anyone would want to kill a young father of three girls, who was delivering pizzas to earn extra money to support his family. >> since sunday we've just been a total wreck and just when you think you've cried your tears and you can't cry anymore, it's all you do. >> not one but two murders that colorado investigators are now taking a much stronger look at, and trying to see, connect the dots possibly between those two murders. colorado investigators from each of those different murder cases have flown down here to texas and are meeting with the investigators that were involved in that high-speed chase yesterday. i'm told by local law enforcement officials here in decatur, texas, that there is evidence inside that black cadillac that those investigator also be very interested in seeing. >> ed lavandera in texas. thanks, ed. new developments in the gun control debate this morning as

well. the national rifle association says it will sue over the state's act. which strengthens the existing assault weapons ban in new york state. the nra's new york affiliate claims the law was pushed through without committee hearings for public input. the new laws include a statewide gun registry, a uniform licensing standard and a seven bullet limit in ammunition magazines. vice president joe biden isn't throwing in the towel on the prospect of federal gun limits. joined by newtown families and new york city mayor michael bloomberg yesterday he vowed to revive the battle to ban assault weapons. and he had a message for lawmakers, as well, including senate democrats who dropped the assault weapons portion of a gun regulation package. he said, quote, think about newtown. here's crime and justice correspondent, joe johns. >> reporter: with a ban on so-called assault weapons all but dead in the senate, according to top democrat harry reid, the vice president said he is not giving up. >> i'm not going to rest, nor is

the president, until we do all of these things. all of these things. >> reporter: he told the family of a teacher killed protecting children in the newtown, connecticut, school shooting, that the country needs some political backbone. >> you know, it's time for the political establishment to show the courage your daughter showed. >> reporter: the father of a 6-year-old also killed at newtown said shame on the congress. >> i'm really ashamed to see that congress doesn't have the guts to stand up and make a change and put a ban on these type of weapons and universal background checks. >> reporter: from new york's mayor bloomberg, a call for public pressure. >> if you want to make a difference, you've got to pick up the phone, call your congressperson. >> reporter: but what happened was no surprise. conservative democrats in the senate, up for re-election, risk riling up pro-gun forces in an election year if they vote for the ban. democratic supporters like retiring michigan senator carl

levin are frustrated. >> do you think it's worth just having a vote? >> sure. i think it's important that people express their views and have a chance to vote those views. and their people back home can judge whether they agree or disagree. >> bad for democrats, though. >> it's not the politics that i want to get into. it's way beyond politics. >> reporter: while the pressure from gun control advocates appears to be working. late thursday senate majority leader harry reid released a statement saying he wants to bring a gun safety bill to the floor after the upcoming recess including provisions on background checks. he said he also wants a vote on an assault weapons ban amendment. so there appears to be one last chance for the senate to vote on the ban after all. the nra saying they've always expected there would be a vote on the ban, and they say they're prepared for a lot of pressure on senators to pass it. joe johns, cnn, washington. >> thanks to joe, there. later on "starting point" we'll talk with aurora shooting survivor steven barton. he's been working with newtown

that triggered a lockdown that was just lifted, just before 3:00 this morning, it's believed all of the dead are marines. identities of the victims, and a motive still not known this morning. >> a huge traffic pileup in canada. take a look at this. 100 vehicles mashed up on the main highway between edmonton and calgary. about 100 people ended up going to hospitals. but only one person there was seriously hurt. police think bad weather, as you can see there, and excessive speed, set off a huge chain reaction. they hope to have the highway open again this morning. jennifer capriati now charged with stalking and battery. >> bizarre story. >> north palm beach, florida, police say she punched her ex-boyfriend on valentine's day at a gym. he claims the former tennis star has harassed and stalked him since they broke up last year. capriati has to appear in court next month. congress' watchdog is saying not so fast to the plan to drop saturday mail. the government accountability office says the postal service legally must deliver the mail six days a week.

to rise late tonight through parts of denver. we're talking some of these locations 7 to 10 inches of snowfall. then it moves over towards the east, affecting kansas, as well as into missouri, also expecting 7 to 10 inches of snowfall. heavy rain down towards the south. a couple inches there. we are looking at potentially some flooding as we go through saturday, as well as into sunday, even into monday. but monday, this is where things get very interesting. in addition to the snow out there, we are going to see a low moving right along the coast. we're talking very gusty winds. all along the path of this storm, and then that snow arriving into the mid-atlantic. i know you guys are asking, how much snow are we talking about? right now it's still too early to tell because we still have to see how much cold air is going to get wrapped up into that system. i can tell you, you are going to be affected by it. for today, we are going to see clouds around. mixed in some sunshine up towards northeast. severe storms down towards eastern texas as well as into louisiana. that includes some big snowmakers. enjoy the temperatures. they're going to be 10 degrees

we are minding your business this morning. it is a big day for blackberry. >> research in motion's blackberry 10 goes on sale today after months of delays. expectations are high. this is make it or break it for this company. the company's stock price up more than 30% this year. the z10 has got mostly positive reviews at about $200. it is going head-to-head with apple's iphone and samsung's galaxy s3. blackberry has a lot of ground to make up. android and apple's ios operating systems make up 70% and 20% of smartphone sales. look at that. the blackberry has just a 3% share here. its success -- the success of the company depends on this one product. another product, miami heat merchandise is hot! just like it's hot streak. a industry report says sales of heat gear are up 30% this year.

breaking news. three dead after a shooting at virginia's quantico marine base. all believed to be marines, including the gunman. washington's spending cuts affecting you. we're just hours from learning which airport control towers will have to close. it could be nearly 200 across the country. nice tug-of-war. the sweet tax deal that could be designed to lure a jimmy fallen-hosted "tonight show" to new york city. welcome back to early start. nice to have you with us this morning, i'm zoraida sambolin. >> good morning, i'm christine romans. it's about 30 minutes past the hour. breaking news this morning. a shooting at the military bailes at quantico, leaving three people dead. it's believed they are all marines. the base was on lockdown earlier this morning. the gunman barricading himself inside the building where he apparently killed himself.

>> ask for everyone's prayers and thoughts for the families who are affected by this tragedy and we ask also that you give us time so we can sort out the details and get you guys the accurate information that you want. >> hmm. wow. more details coming up in a live report from quantico. and in other news today, developing story out of texas may help solve the murder of tom clements. colorado police in texas this morning, at the scene of a police shoot-out that left the suspect dead. the dead man may have been the subject of a massive manhunt for the colorado prison chief killer. cnn correspondent ed lavandera is live in decatur, texas, with the very latest. this story is just absolutely bizarre. what is the very latest on it? >> indeed, a lot of twists and turns. now that investigators from colorado taking a closer look at the suspect in this high speed chase that ended in a wild shoot-out, but not for just one murder, but now two murders.

this is how a high speed chase across north texas ended. a black cadillac with two different colorado license plates smashed by an 18 wheeler. but the crash didn't stop the driver from firing at law enforcement officers. he was shot and killed in the firefight. >> he wasn't planning on being taken alive. i mean, that's obvious that he was trying to hurt somebody and he was trying to hurt the police. >> reporter: the chase started when a sheriff's deputy tried to pull the cadillac over on a remote stretch of texas highway. deputy james boyd was shot twice in the chest. but he was wearing a bulletproof vest, and is expected to survive. that triggered a long, high-speed chase. >> he came by me, i was say going about 100 miles an hour. had his left arm out the window and he was just shooting. he shot four times when he passed by my car parked in the median of the highway. >> reporter: the denver post quoting federal and state officials reports the suspect is 28-year-old evan spencer ebel, a parolee from the denver area.

police say he is the focus of the investigation into the murder of tom clements, the director of colorado's prison system. in a press release thursday night el paso county investigators in colorado did not deny the accuracy of the report but instead criticized the leak of the name by law enforcement was sos. >> i know there's a lot of rumors going around and people wanting to know if this is connected to the colorado shooting of the director of the prison system. we don't know that it is. or it's not. >> reporter: and in another strange twist, denver police investigators also say there's a strong connection between the driver of the cadillac in texas, and the murder of a 27-year-old pizza delivery driver last sunday afternoon. nathan leon's body was found in a remote area outside of denver. his family has struggled to figure out why anyone would want to kill a young father of three

girls, who was delivering pizzas to earn extra money to support his family. >> since sunday we've just been a total wreck and just when you think you've cried your tears and you can't cry anymore, it's all you do. >> so now investigators from those two different murder investigations in colorado have scrambled to get to texas. we're told by law enforcement officials in decatur that there's evidence inside that black cadillac that the investigators from colorado will be very interested to look at. in the meantime there's a press briefing scheduled for 1:00 eastern today. perhaps more light being shed on the situation. we'll bring that to you later on in the day. zoraida? >> your heart really goes out for those families. ed lavandera reporting live for us. thank you. nearly 200 air traffic control towers are facing shutdowns today. today is the day we learn which ones get the ax. it's all because forced spending cuts are forcing the faa to make

some tough decisions. the big question is what does it mean for you when you fly? cnn's rene marsh is at an airport in fredrick, maryland, that will be affected. that tower practically brand-new. built with government money. and now, because of government money problems, it could be shut down. >> i know. does that even make any sense here? that's absolutely right here, christine. not even a year, the federal government spent money to build this tower and they could find out today that they will have to shut down, so the trickle-down effect for flyers, it means delayed flights, fewer flights, as well, and for the people who work inside these towers, it means they're out of jobs. >> 3-0 report three miles. >> reporter: cnn is inside fredrick, maryland es airport control tower. >> affirmative, make right. >> reporter: it's brand-spanking new, built with $5.3 million in federal stimulus money. opened just last may, and now, you guessed it, likely to be

shut down by, who else, the federal government. fredrick is one of 23 towers at small and medium airports the faa may close because of forced spending cuts. >> we're awarded the money, and you know, ten months later they say that you don't need a tower here. so it's the world of mixed messages. >> reporter: in florida, the government also giveth and now may taketh away. $1.8 million in stimulus money went to construct this new tower at opa-locka. one million for this new tower in st. petersburg. now, all on the chopping block. >> look to be at three miles. >> reporter: a navy veteran hases been clearing pilots for takeoff and landing for the past 11 years. it's all she knows. >> it's scary, because i'm going to have to figure out something else to do. for an income. it means i'm going on unemployment, and that's the only income i'll have for me and my daughter. >> reporter: while airports will

remain open, she says closing towers affects safety. >> there's going to be close calls. there's going to be midairs. there's going to be a runway accident. >> reporter: some pilots agree. >> and tragically, something is going to happen and then we're going to review this decision. >> reporter: but the faa says flyers will be inconvenienced but safety won't be compromised. a tough sell for ambrose. >> then why did they build this tower? in 2010 they said that safety was an issue, and then they funded this tower. now, we're in 2013 and safety will not be affected. which is it? >> reporter: all right, well the faa says that the goal here is to shut down the towers that will have the least impact on the passengers. back to you, christine. >> it just shows how -- how that whole sequester forced spending cuts. all of these across-the-board cuts without the wiggle room to make choices that are best for people and flyers. rene marsh, thanks.

>> 36 minutes past the hour. in just a few hours president obama will be arriving at the final stop of his middle east tour. he'll be in jordan for talks with king abdullah. earlier this morning the president visited the gravesite of slain former israeli prime minister its ack rabin. topping the agenda in yojordan will be the syrian civil war. 350,000 refugees have fled to jordan and that number is continuing to climb. the president also expected to discuss israeli/palestinian relations with king abdullah. let's get back to the breaking news out of quantico. three people dead, it's believed they're all marines. let's get straight to shannon travis who is live on the scene with new details. good morning, shannon. >> good morning, christine. yeah, we have new details. we've been saying, we've been told earlier that they were all believed to be marines. we can now confirm that they were, in fact, all three marines. we also were a little unclear about the genders of the victims. we can now confirm, according to the spokesman here, that two of

them were male, one of them was female. the shooter was male. the first victim was male. and the second victim, who was found in the room with the shooter, was a female. now, let's go back over what actually happened. about 11:00 p.m. last night, basically there was a 911 alert, essentially that went out. essentially that went out over the base that there was a shooting over at the officer's candidates school. i'm just going to show you. it's a massive base. basically that would be down here on the map. we are actually way up here, christine, because, again, the base is so huge. after that 911 call went out, essentially there was a lockdown on base. people were told to stay inside and lock their doors and not go out. police swung into action, obviously, started to look for and apprehend the shooter. they found the shooter in a barrack, essentially where the service members actually sleep at, barricaded himself into a room.

there was some time that they tried to establish communication with the shooter. unclear if they were successful or if the shooter was unresponsive or not. about two hours after receiving that call, and actually going into the room pass, once they got into the room, again, they found the shooter apparently dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the woman who was also in there, we're expecting a few more details about motive and more about the shooter in about 30 minutes when they'll have a press conference to tell us more. christine? >> they'll be looking at what the relationship is among these three people, the order of events here, and just what may have -- what may have propelled that, that shoorter and what -- there is a briefing in just a few minutes. am i right? >> that's right. at the top of the hour at 7:00, we expect officials to step up to the microphone and tell us more. >> all right. shannon travis. i know you'll be following it very closely for us. >> 39 minutes past the hour. calm and composed in the face of danger. a young girl hides from burglars that are lurking so close you

all right now developing story in southeast georgia. hunt right now for the person who fatally shot a 13-month-old boy in the face. shot his mother in the leg. sherry west says she was pushing her son antonio in a stroller yesterday near her home when two boys approached, showed a gun, and demanded money. cnn's nick valenti is in georgia. what can you tell us about what she says happened here? >> just so tragic what happened in brunswick, georgia. the fatal shooting happened thursday morning, early thursday morning at about 9:00 a.m. on this corner right behind me here. the mother says that she was on her morning walk, pushing her 13-month-old in a stroller when two young boys aproposed her. she said she had never seen them before in her life. she describes the shooters as a 13 to 15-year-old boy. he was accompanied by somebody as young as 10 years old. now, i spoke to the city manager of brunswick yesterday. he says there is no clear motive of this fatal shooting. meanwhile, the mother spoke to our local affiliate waws, and

she said the two boys were trying to rob her. >> why? why my little one? you know. they should have just taken the pocketbook and go. they said we're going to kill you if you don't give your money. i said i swear i don't have any. i put my arms around my baby and he shot me and then he shot my baby right in the head. >> now the mother is -- she did that interview just a few hours after her baby was pronounced dead and you can tell from that interview the emotions are still very raw. >> so, nick, what can you tell me about this neighborhood? does it have problems with crime? are shootings rare here? give us a little sense of what -- where brunswick, georgia, is and what the community is like. >> yeah, that's a great question. and context for our viewers, what makes this all the more shocking is that this is

traditionally a good neighborhood. if you look around me here, this is a mixture of historic homes flanked by public housing. but there are some really good schools just around the corner here. those schools went on lockdown yesterday during the shooting. but what makes this all the more tragic is that there were no witnesses. this happened at about 9:00 a.m. just as people were getting the full stride of their day. police are offering a $10,000 reward and there currently is a manhunt under way here in brunswick. >> nick valencia, really a sad story for that baby and that family. thanks, nick. >> 47 minutes past the hour. quick-thinking teenager in california helped police bust up a burglary ring by hiding very quietly in a closet. 15-year-old called 911, ran into her parents' walk-in closet, when the alarm system went off while she was home alone. the emergency operator told that frightened girl not to say a word after she heard the criminal voices just inches away from her as she hid behind those clothes there.

51 minutes past the hour. one day into march madness and brackets are busted everywhere, thanks to harvard beating new mexico. but not mine. andy scholes joins us now with the beacher report. how's your bracket doing? >> see, this is my bracket and this is what i did this morning with it. because like many people i had new mexico going all the way to the final four. so my bracket now in terrible shape thanks to harvard. this was such a big upset. president obama, who went to harvard, he picked new mexico to win this game. in his bracket. but it's a perfect example of why it's called march madness. the crimson knocked down threes all game and hit the clutch shots down the stretch to get their first-ever ncaa tournament win. they move on to play arizona in round three. after last night's upset less than 1% of more than 8 million brackets filled out on espn are still perfect. mainly thanks to this new mexico upset. one person's bracket who wasn't busted by harvard is the

credit. the new york daily news reports that new york's state budget includes tax breaks for any talk or variety program that's filmed at least five seasons outside of new york prior to being first relocated in season to new york. rumors have been swirling that fallon will take over for jay leno as the host of "the tonight show" next year and nbc will move the show back to new york. and hence the tax break. no announcement so far from nbc. it turns out i think this is my favorite story of the day, groundhog's day just wasn't the ground doing's day. a prosecutor in ohio has indicted punxsutawney phil for getting the winter forecast wrong. can we join in? is it a class action? the legal term is misrepresentation of an early spring. can you extradite a rodent from pennsylvania to ohio? phil has no comment. his handler said it was 65 degrees one day a couple of weeks ago, so the prosecutor is barking up the wrong burrow. >> i don't know. it sets a dangerous precedent for meteorologists and stock
